Delicia Sampero
The Mirror Mama Project
March 2 | 5PM
The Mirror Mama Project is a collaborative project between artist Delicia Sampero, Pacific Mamas and Refugee Mamas from Africa and the Middle East. The Mirror Mama Project profiles the face of the immigrant mother and traces their cultural trail from place of origin to New Zealand, highlighting their presence and the work they do in the community.
Large-scale portraits of these women, painted by Delicia Sampero, juxtaposed with material arrangements / pictures created by the mamas, bring together their calligraphy tapa, weavings, tivaevae, body ornamentation, weaving, embroidery and beadwork. These arrangements of material culture suggest an aspect of self-reflection and a celebration of culture and heritage.
The Mirror Mama Project continues Delicia Sampero's I AM series, expressing aspects of her collaborator's identity.
The Mirror Mama Project support initiatives by Mary Ama and the Pacific Mamas and Maureen Lewis with the Refugees As Survivors, establishing contacts and workshops between Mamas and the Refugee Centre
